I am thrilled to announce that one of my designs has been selected as one of the featured designs for the 2023 Quilter’s Planner! This project was one that has been close to my heart for years now. When I started playing Duplos with my oldest son, he would always build racecars and I would build patterns that I dreamed of turning into quilts. You can read more about my inspiration story for this quilt over on the Quilter’s Planner blog!
From Toy to Quilt
Like I mentioned, I was inspired to make this quilt from the time I spent with my two young sons. I loved all the curvy pieces in the Duplo sets and trying to create patterns with the different pieces. First off, if you’re not familiar with Duplos, they are basically the preschooler version of Legos. There are a good mix of long, flat pieces (analagous to plates for those up on their Lego lingo), square-ish pieces (aka bricks), and curvy pieces of different heights. When I decided to use the Duplo blocks as my source of inspiration, I knew I didn’t want my quilt to be an exact representation of all the pieces, so I played around with a few of the pieces and decided to use two of the curvy pieces and a long flat piece as my proverbial building blocks. I adjusted the proportions slightly to make the math work out well in the quilt.
However, I did use ALL the Duplo colors in my cover quilt for the planner 😉 Or at least most of them – 9 colors!
Going All Out
Because this quilt was so special to me as a mom, I really wanted to go all out!
-
I made a special strip to piece the back that had some extra curves to echo the front.
-
I used matchstick quilting so I wouldn’t distract from the bold shapes of the design.
-
I used several sections of contrasting thread to highlight the “plate” pieces. I used turquoise, my favorite color, to make it feel even more special.
-
I rounded the corners to echo the drunkard path blocks. Check out my blog on rounded corners here!
Looking Ahead
For now, this pattern will be exclusive to the 2023 Quilter’s Planner. If you’re interested in this or one of the other lovely designs, be sure to check out the planner over at The Quilter’s Planner website. You can see the other patterns included in the planner on the Quilter’s Planner blog or instagram account. The 2023 planners will be available soon, if you’d like to order it.
I do plan to release this pattern on my own as well! I plan to release it in more sizes and 2 colorways in the second half of 2023, and I can’t wait to see this project evolve! Be sure to subscribe to my newsletter to get all the updates on this pattern when the full version is released next year!
