I am about one week in to this project focusing on clearing out my WIP pile. I’m also working on clearing out a bunch of other general clutter in my life, so I’ll try not to let that cross over too much and just focus on the sewing and crafting items.
This week, the 3 quilt backs I ordered previously on an early Black Friday sale arrived in the mail. I’ve pieced the backings and contacted a longarmer about getting those 3 quilt
s done. I should be able to mail them off this week. I’ve also completed 3 mends – 2 were on jeans with worn spots or holes, and one was repairing a seam on a pair of leggings. The repair on the leggings were passable, but the jean repairs are quite good, and should add a lot of life to those garments. Finally, I removed 2 items from my mending pile because upon further investigation, they weren’t really reparable. I realized that one of the problems with these purses was the fake leather had peeling paint. I can repair zippers or replace linings, but I am not interested in re-painting the fake leather. While I don’t like that they ended up in landfill, I truly don’t know of another option. And they definitely don’t need to continue to sit in my closet indefinitely. I’ve included a note on acceptable resolutions below.
Next week, I hope to send off those 3 quilts to be longarmed, figure out a facing plan for my Paper Triangles wall hanging. It’s octagonal, and I’m not 100% sure how to tackle that finishing. It may take a bit of trial and error. Finally, I would like to begin addressing some of my blog backlog.
A Note on Acceptable Resolutions
There are many acceptable resolutions to any given project. And what I might call “done” might not satisfy your goals, or vis versa. And that is OK! For you, simply re-classifying a WIP as a UFO might be enough. That may be enough to signal to your brain that you no longer consider this a “works in progress” but it’s now officially an “unfinished object”. If re-classifying the item works for you and clears up your to-do list a bit, then great!
For me, I doubt that I will simply re-classify anything as a UFO. However, I may end up deciding that some mending projects are too far gone or I may decide not to upcycle an existing clothing item that I own to make something new. In that case, I would donate the existing clothing item (it’s in good shape) and get the “project” out of my life and out of my mind.
Again, I will remind you that clearing out your WIP pile is about you – it’s about clearing up space in your sewing room and your mind for you to do more work, more creative work, more joyful work. It’s not about ticking off numbers of quilts finished or anything like that. You get to decide what “done” means!
The Lists
I’m going to list my projects by Quilting, Garments, and Other. For each new bog post, I’ll simply copy the list and update the status, highlighting the changes with orange text and progress that has been made. These lists are not in priority order, they’re just lists. I get to make progress in any order I choose 🤪
In case you’re not familiar, you can use the order given here to follow along as I make progress through each project.
-
Quilting projects typically progress in the following order: fabric and pattern selection, cutting, piecing, basting, quilting, and binding.
-
While I’m new to garment sewing, Ill use the following status updates for now, since I think they’re mostly right: fabric and pattern selection, pattern printing and cutting, fabric cutting, sewing.I also have some other crafty projects that I want to get out of my WIP pile. These are pretty random projects so they each get their own status update. I’ll do my best to make it make sense 😂.

removed 2 purses from my mending pile. They both had peeling fake leather and I determined that I would not be able to repair either. I hate throwing stuff away, but I also don’t need to keep it.
-
Other
-
spoon – I started carving a spoon a few years ago and never finished
-
a crocheted project – i got halfway through a project years ago and the yarn has been taunting me since then. I want to use and enjoy something made out of the yarn rather than be haunted by it. I need to frog the project and pick a new one since i don’t remember what i was working on
-
my blog backlog – I have a backlog of blogs that are in “draft” form with almost no work don on them. They either need to be written or need to get out of the queue.
-
A secret writing project
-
A website re-design – I have some changes in mind and I need to work out exactly how I hope to accomplish those and what my goals are.
