Just like every book needs an editor, every quilt pattern needs a technical editor.

Technical Editors (like me!) serve a different role than pattern testers. Pattern testers are checking the usability of a pattern by actually making the quilt. They provide valuable feedback, but it’s generally different than the feedback from a technical editor.

Technical editors do not necessarily make a sample quilt or even a quilt block. Rather, they are responsible for checking the fabric requirements, cutting instructions, and general proofreading.

Take a look at the process and my background below and reach out to inquire about my availability.

Though I am new to the quilt technical editing world, I am not new to conducting technical reviews. I have worked as an ecologist producing and reviewing technical documents for over 11 years. Additionally, I have been quilting for over 6 years and pattern testing for nearly 5 years. Finally, I have written my own patterns and worked with multiple technical editors. I’ve included answers to some frequently asked questions below.

  • I can work with many file types provided – PDF, Microsoft Word, or Google Docs. Please note that I prefer to work with a fully compiled PDF so that I can assess the entire pattern. However, there may be reasons to work only with the text, and I’m happy to accommodate when possible! Please note that I will make comments and it is up to you to make the edits as you deem appropriate.
  • I strive to review patterns within one week, and will confirm an estimated review time when I agree to review your pattern. Long or complicated patterns or patterns that are sent during a particularly busy personal time may take longer to review. If you require a faster turn around, that can often be accommodated – please let me know if a faster review is needed.
  • It is impossible to predict accurately how long any pattern will take to review. The initial review for most patterns can be reviewed in 1 to 3 hours. Long or complicated patterns may take longer to review.
  • I will be glad to do a back check of your pattern after you make edits based on my comments, if needed. You may or may not feel that a back check is needed depending on the number and type of comments.
  • My current (introductory) rate is $20 per hour. Starting July 1, 2025, my rate will increase to $24 per hour. Any patterns received on or after July 1 will be billed at the new rate. I bill in quarter hour increments and will send a PayPal invoice at the end of the pattern review. This rate is subject to change and will be updated here to reflect current rates.
  • Please note that even the best technical editors cannot find every error. Including both a technical editor and a good pattern testing team is important in the rollout of your pattern.
