Introducing the Round the Corner Quilt Pattern! My latest pattern was inspired by my time playing Duplos with my young sons. Where they saw race cars and trucks, I saw quilt patterns. Where they saw truck hoods, I saw drunkards path blocks. Where they saw flat bed trailers, I saw a contrasting stripe amid the curves. I love to make quilt patterns from stuff I find in the world around me, and Duplos lend themselves seamlessly (pun intended ;)) to a quilt pattern. The only trick is to find the right proportions.
While this design is inspired by a children’s toy, I designed it to be a versatile and sophisticated interpretation that would be at home on any couch or on the foot of anyone’s bed. Even if you’ve never touched a Duplo or Lego, even if you’ve never had kids or this quilt isn’t for a kid, the multiple colorway options allow you to design a colorful, nostalgic color palette or a simple, sophisticated version.

Because this project was so nostalgic for me, I took a stack of Duplos with me to the fabric store to get the perfect color match. This 10-color version uses the following shades from the Paintbrush Studios Painter’s Palette Solids: Tomato, Tangerine, Daisy, Island, Paradise, Danube, Bright Aqua, Petunia, and Ebony (colors 1-9, respectively).

When I made my 3-color version, I used a bit of color theory and selected colors approximating a complimentary color scheme with the teal across the color wheel from the yellow and the coppery orange on the color wheel. This version uses Painter’s Palette Solids in Bronze and Poseidon and Michael Miller Cotton Couture in Straw .

This design was originally published in the 2023 Quilter’s Planner with only the 10-color option and in the Large Throw size. This version keeps the same playful aesthetic, but provides an additional size (Small Throw) and colorway (3-color option).
